What to record before changing carton-sealing tape

Packaging tape · · 3 min read

A practical guide to documenting your carton, tape and packing conditions so a replacement can be assessed against the job it needs to do.

Packaging tape packaging from ANYTAPE

Start with a clear description of the job

When a carton seal needs attention, begin with a record of the application before asking for a different roll. Give your supplier enough detail to understand what you pack, how the tape is applied and what happens after sealing. A request for the same width alone leaves important questions unanswered.

Prepare one short job sheet for each packing setup. Include the carton dimensions, packed weight, product type and whether you use a hand dispenser or carton-sealing machine. If several cartons or lines are involved, identify which ones need assessment rather than treating every job as identical.

Capture the existing roll specification

Photograph the roll label and outer carton, then record the product code, adhesive description, width, thickness, roll length and core size. Mark any missing detail as unknown. Keep a labelled sample of the current tape and a representative carton for comparison.

ANYTAPE’s published packaging-tape range includes clear acrylic and rubber-adhesive options, machine rolls and printed handling tapes. Check the individual listing when comparing formats. A different adhesive description or roll length should be identified in the comparison, rather than hidden behind a matching width.

Separate sealing conditions from later storage

Record where the carton is sealed and where it goes afterwards. Note the temperature at application separately from any chilled storage or transport stage. Describe whether the carton surface is dry, damp, dusty, printed or coated, and photograph the actual sealing area.

Application conditions matter: 3M’s technical information for its Scotch Box Sealing Tape 373 describes room-temperature application as easiest and notes that its adhesive becomes firmer at lower temperatures. That guidance is specific to that product. Ask for the proposed tape’s own application instructions and assess it under your conditions; do not transfer another product’s temperature guidance to an ANYTAPE grade.

Make the issue observable

Describe what you see instead of relying on a broad label such as poor quality. Does an edge lift immediately, does the tape split during dispensing, or does a sealed flap open later? Record when the issue appeared, how many cartons were checked and how many showed it.

Include clear photographs and any relevant batch or delivery reference. Keep unused rolls identifiable while the issue is reviewed. This record supports a more focused discussion without assuming that the tape, carton or equipment is responsible before the evidence is examined.

Agree a comparison before changing supply

Ask your packing team to define acceptable results before a trial. Use representative cartons and your normal process, record the tape code and equipment settings, and note any rework. Inspect trial cartons at agreed handling points, including after the usual storage period.

Where practical, change one variable at a time and record any unavoidable differences. A sample that looks satisfactory immediately after sealing is a starting observation; keep the later checks in your assessment. Confirm equipment compatibility and the relevant product documentation before making a production change.

Send a complete enquiry

Send ANYTAPE your job sheet, photographs, current roll specification, order quantity, expected ongoing usage and delivery postcode. Include the date you need a response, and distinguish a sample request from a request for replacement supply.
